Before the fleet went to sea.

The November 1973 Ingalls press kit: the ships, the shipyard, the suppliers and the promises. Explore the original pages and the research extracted from them.

November 1973, in context

A primary source, with its perspective intact.

Ingalls described a new way to build, equip and operate a destroyer. This collection preserves that contemporary account while distinguishing specifications, plans, promotional claims and later verification.

Canada and Sweden also appear in the supplier list. The original 30-ship program is the scope of these documents; it must not be confused with the eventual 31-ship class.

The industrial base

Search companies, cities and components. Regional contract amounts remain separate from company entries.

How the ships were built

Three hull sections, separate deckhouse erection, electronics tested ashore and a floating launch pontoon. The first two hulls were described as semi-modular.

Designed for the sailor

Berths, colors, air conditioning, messing and automation, preserved as Ingalls described them before fleet service.

The next archive target is specific.

NARA's 2022 release list identifies eight boxes of Spruance acquisition-project subject files: RG 344 · UD-07W 48 · HMS 652243. Current access and the box list still need confirmation. The research-lead register records the evidence and the next question to ask.

Read the findings, feature plans and archival-trip preparation · Page inventory · Original machine OCR

Corrected transcriptions have been checked against the scans. Original machine OCR is retained separately; scans remain the quotation authority. Historical claims remain dated to their sources; later verification is recorded separately.
